How has the world you come from shaped your dreams and aspirations? I have been blessed to be born into one of the most loving supportive families. Any ambition or dream of mine has always been encouraged. As a child, I was encouraged to be a leader in every situation, to go out and strive for what I wanted and not wait for things to be handed to me. The world I come from has taught me to be a leader, loving and compassionate, but still be focused and ambitious. I learned by example, as a child watching my father and grandfathers be leaders in our church. I wanted to serve as they had. Participating in my youth group, I was elected President of our local district and Secretary of our state board. I became involved with student activities at my High School. Those years were such a learning experience as I was involved with dance team and student council, allowing me to collaborate with a wide variety of other students, as well as the school administration. I loved representing my peers and learning to take on the responsibility of being a servant leader.

Of all the ways you could succeed in your life, why have you chosen to succeed in the Miss America Pageant?

The Miss America pageant has been an inspiration to me. Miss America has come to represent not just external beauty, but the inner strength of confident, intelligent women of achievement who contribute so much to the vitality and welfare of our society. This is the kind of woman I admire and respect and who has become not only my role model, but the universal representation of the ideals of all young women in America. These are the reasons I have chosen to succeed in the Miss America Organization and I would be proud to be part of the community of such truly admirable women.

What social issue other than your platform will have the greatest impact on your generation and why?

Use of the internet, including social media. The key question is whether this networked, always-on connection to people and information will turn out to be a net positive or a net negative. Near-term reform of the education system seems absolutely necessary to help learners know how to maximize the positive and minimize the negative. We must not lose the deep-thinking and face-to-face social skills that are clearly so important to a thriving culture. And we must acquire the skills to evaluate fact from fiction as we use the internet to function as our conduit to information.
